Maxwell’s began as Chelmsford Agway in 1964 selling lawn and garden supplies, animal feed and pet food. Previous to Agway, the land was occupied by E.E. Paignon Farm Supply and Eastern States Farmers Exchange. Both businesses supported the local community by providing feed to local farmers which was shipped in by railroad cars on the adjacent railroad tracks.
The current owners, Lisa and Manny Bougoulas, acquired the business in 2010. They made many changes to the store including expanding the organic lawn & garden offerings, more unique garden products, introduction of premium pet foods and expansion of the chicken and wild bird departments. In April of 2019 they officially changed the name of the store to Maxwell’s. You can see Maxwell in the front seat of the truck on the store logo, along with Molly in the back of the truck. Maxwell and Molly are Lisa and Manny’s much loved and pampered dogs.
